What’s Public School like?14 replies

Posted on 15 Jun 2009 at 2:26pm

I just found out that I may be going to public school this year which means I did twenty hours of summer reading homework for nothing!

I am scared to death. I’ve gone to the same all-girls private school my entire life. I’m going into 8th grade and the public school is number 3 in the state for public schools.

What do I wear? What is the dress code (for most schools)? What is the average class size (for most schools)? Where does everyone shop? Do they like designers? Will they think I’m stuck-up? What do they wear to gym? How big are the schools? Do they carry purses? Do they have tote bags or backpacks? Can you wear sunglasses? Are you allowed to have your cell phone in school? Can you wear flip flops? How many different outfits do you need? Is it true that public schools are a year behind private schools? Are the teachers nice? How does the honors/AP system work? Are their really cliques there? How do you make friends? What is lunch like? Do they accept credit cards? How much cash should I bring? Do they require sports? Are they really good at sports? Are sports intense there? Do they wear mini-skirts? What are the most popular designers (out of Louis Vuitton, Coach, Gucci, Dolce and Gabanna, Calvin Klein, Versace, Juicy Couture, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Chanel, Guess?, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, and Pucci)

ADVICE PLEASE! I am stressing out and am in tears right now. I don’t want to go to public school, everyone says I won’t survive there! There are millions of questions going through my head!!!!!
At least in my private school EVERYONE is a prep. There are no other stereotypes. Grades and sports are very important. A B+ average is considered stupid. You need a C+ average at least in every subject or you get kicked out.

They require 3 sports and fitness and yoga.

Dont you worry, public schools are really cool, they’re big, lots of kids, lots of clubs and sports, it’s awesome!
Look, just be yourself when it comes to clothes and style, in public schools there are all kinds of kids and styles and tastes :) )) Dress codes basically say, no really short skirts, not too much cleavage showing but that’s just extreme slutty stuff, no one ever gets into real trouble with that!!
If you want, give me an email, I could tell you a lot more :)

Wow I definitely can’t answer ALL your questions lol but I usually wear jeans and t-shirts. That’s what everybody wears actually. And every school has a handbook. This will tell you what you can and cannot do. and just be yourself. and friendly. It’s not that bad. Just have fun!

same as private school, only they dont make as much of a big deal out of grades and you dont have to wear a uniform(of course there are some schools who have the uniform policy to prevent violence)
every school has a dress code-no sleeve less,no short short(skanky really) mini skirts,no showing your belly no advertising(on clothes or body) drugs, sex,or violence
you dont have too take sports unless you want to
its same school, only its not that expensive,so people are the same as you see them in private school
you make friends the same way(its not that different)
public schools arent a year behind private schools, they just arent as strict at them
you need as many outfits as you want(if you want to wear a shirt five times then go ahead,as long as you bother to wash it)
i dont know any public schools that accept credit cards, unless its for lunch/yearbooks of course its usually your parents that are supposed to have a credit card
again-bags,totes,sunglasses,flip flops,or ANYTHING i dont know. Its different schools that allow different things
its not like youre going out into the real world or anything
PUBLIC school is only different form private school by the policies(how strict they are with tolerance or what expectations they have for you)

Ohh don’t stress! I went to a catholic school until about the time you did, then transfered to a public school and did fine! The best advice I have is to be yourself and don’t worry about what other people think. Have confidence in yourself and don’t let your worries hold you back…go in with a positive attitude.

To answer some of your questions, most schools have dresscodes that are pretty common sense…no short skirts or shorts, no cut-off shirts or low-cut shirts. Other than that, you’ll find it pretty fun to be able to wear pretty much whatever you want, instead of uniforms :) A pair of jeans and a nice shirt will do fine. For gym, just have some gym shorts and a tshirt, and remember to bring tennis-shoes and socks.

Any bag works, kids have all different kinds, so just get something you like, sunglasses aren’t really needed. My school didn’t allow cell phones, so for all that stuff, it just depends on the actual school you’re going to.

Honestly, don’t be worried about it. Just go in, introduce yourself to everyone, be approachable, and smile :D

    Well at our school…
No pants above knee length (no mini skirts)
No tank tops only short or long sleeves
Everyone pretty much wears tee-shirts and jeans
We shop at Hollister, AE, Aeropostale, and prettty much everywhere
    No cell phone
    Yes Flip flops
We have about 20 kids in each class
    Gym Uniform
Both tote bags and backpacks mostly totes
Teachers can be very not nice and sometimes really nice
Lunch is horrbile-grossist food ever, I always bring lunch
    No cash for school
    Definetly no credit cards
Our school system has no money for sports so not requried
Just be nice to make friends, don’t act mean and defintly talk to people in class otherwise they will think you are shy

And Most Importantly Dont worry to much no one will remember how you acted or dressed or anything 10 years from now. And the friends you make will like you no matter what! School is to learn and all schools are different! Have Fun!!

Okay just calm down!! It will be fine. Let me answer some of your questions.
There isn’t really a dress code, just no tube tops or spaghetti straps.
The class size is pretty large, usually 100-200 people
Different people shop at different places
Depends if you act stuck up
Sometimes, there are uniforms for gym
Usually there are large public schools
    Sometimes people carry purses
You can’t go wrong with either
    Outside
Yes but it has to be on silent
    Yes
    A lot
I don’t know but you’ll probably be a little ahead
    Sometimes
    I don’t really know
    Yes, usually
    It’s a natural thing
It depends, on your first day it might be a little hard
    No.
    Not a lot
    YEs
They’re normal people too so idk
    a little bit more
    sometimes
none of those. you have to see because its different

You need to realize that people who go to public school are not aliens. Open your mind a litle bit.

and don’t worry. you’ll be fine.

    best of luck!

I’m sorry, but I just laughed at those brands you just named. Uh no. Nobody wears the brands in middle school. For one, its school. Why are you worrying about AP/Honors classes? That’s in high school hon. Calm down. Most people wear jeans, shoes(not flip flops or heels. Most of the time not allowed), and a shirt. No mid-driffs, halters, tank tops less than 3 inches wide(straps). No see through shirts. Most class sizes range from 20-35. At least at my school. In 6th grade, we had the same classes with the same people for the first 4 periods. In my 4 periods with those people, it was a really small class. We had like 24 kids in each class. This year, I took a class that had probably 35 kids in it. The class room was only fit to accommodate 32 though. Most people shop at Abercrombie&Fitch(Some preppy store), Hollister, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Pac Sun, Tillys, Hot Topic, Wet Seal, Anchor Blue, Forever 21. I’m not sure about guys though. They do wear designers, but more like Baby Phat, South Pole, Phat Farm, Ecko, Roca Wear. Depends on your personality really. Usually they have gym clothes. School sizes range from 300-3000. Most girls don’t carry purses to class. It depends on the person. At my school you’re not allowed to carry them to class because of the space that they take up. Not in the buildings you can’t wear sunglasses. You’re allowed to have it at school, but its usually supposed to be off in your locker or backpack. Most schools have a strict policy on electronics. Depends on the health and safety code. We aren’t allowed to wear flip flops. You don’t wear uniforms. No we aren’t behind private schools. Some of the teachers are nice. Honestly, they don’t usually have AP/Honors. Some schools may have cliques. There’s no proper way to make friends. Some how once you start talking they’re your friend. Lunch is like lunch. Depends on what you’re having. I doubt that middle schools accept credit cards. You should probably bring no more than 7 dollars. Our lunch is 2.25. And you can buy certain things at the snack bar, some teachers sell water, the gym sells water, gatorade and vitaman water. No most schools don’t require sports. It depends on the players usually. Sports are pretty intense for public schools. Some girls do wear mini skirts. But to make sure you’re not showing too much skin, stand up and put your hands at your sides. If you can feel skin, then its too short. Good luck!

I just went to private school after leaving public school. I went to private school till 7th grade, but then decided to return to private school for 10th grade. I’m sorry to anyone this offends, but I TOTALLY HATE PUBLIC SCHOOL. Private schools are just better in my opinion. Better structure, better quality teachers, better people. But you will survive, don’t worry. Just be ready for a bunch of people that think they can get away with whatever they want. Oh and it’s alot less structured, obviously, ANYONE can go.

    Wear jeans, tshirts, etc,
Most public school kids do not wear Prada, Coach, or Juicy Couture.
They mostly shop at whatever stores are at your local mall. American Eagle, Charlotte Russe, Hot Topic, whatever.
Designer is not as popular and can often cause you to be labeled “stuck up rich b*tch”.
No sunglasses in the school, for the most part.
No cell phones, but kids use them anyway.
You may have standardized dress instead of uniforms.
Teachers are mean and nice just like every other school.
There is honors and AP, though it is less rigorous and alot easier than private school.
Public schools are generally behind private schools, since private schools are usually College Preparatory.
You make friends the same way you always do, though the kids may not be as high class as you are used to.
Carry however much money you want, but do not tell anyone how much you have :) haha.
Credit cards are probably not going to be of much use to you.
    Sports are not required.
Some schools are really good at sports and are very intense, other schools suck.
Mini skirts / flipflops might be against your dress code. Check.

sorry to tell you but thats life. and, its public school. the only difference is there aren’t any uniforms. and everyone gets stereotyped. i get stereotyped as goth, some people i know get stereotyped as scene and skater. it doesn’t matter what other people think and im not trying to be mean but i don’t feel sorry for you. but i will give you some tips.

    1. the dress code for most schools, is
    a) nothing shorter that your arms down at full length
    b) the shortest sleeve you can wear is tank top length
    c) no open toes shoes

    2. i think the average class size is like 20-30 pretty normal

    3. everyone shops differently. my cousin shops at really popular girly stores and i shop mostly at hot topic. and if you try to be like everyone else, some people may think you’re stuck up but some people will think that anyway. but pretty much the only people that will who are actually stuck up themselves but won’t admit it.

    4. some girls carry purses. i don’t. again, trying to fit it but being something you’re not in the process, will most likely make people not like you. i know a girl who’s like that and no one likes her.

    5. no you can’t have your phone at school. well, you can have it in your locker but you can’t use it and its better to have it off at school.

    6. you can’t wear sunglasses in class. part of the dress code, another part i forgot, you can’t wear hats in school. well at least not at mine.

    7. and i don’t know if public schools are behind private. i would think not because kids do transfer from private to public and vise versa.

    8. it doesn’t matter how many outfits. you wear what you have and you wear what you want when you want.

    9. some teachers are mean. it all depends. i remember having some funny teachers and some pretty mean teachers.

    10. the honors/AP thing im not sure. you can probably ask a teacher or someone when you get there.

    11. yeah. there are cliques. and they vary depending on what grade you’re in. in high school, theres jocks, probably goths or punks, girly girls, the stuck up girls, preps, nerds, etc.

    12. friends. the same as anywhere. just be yourself and you might meet people who have the same interests.

    13. …no, they don’t accept credit cards. what kind of question is that? its a school not a bank.

    14. just bring enough money for lunch. my mom gave me a check for so much at a time and then when i needed more she wrote another check.

    15. lunch is pretty normal, its also my favorite part :) you get your food on a tray, and sit at a lunch table. la de da…

    16. sports aren’t required but they are there if you want to play. and there are different sports for every school

    17. some girls wear mini skirts. but again, no shorter that at arms length

    18. and for the 3rd or 4th time, don’t try to be something you aren’t. its doesn’t matter what the most popular designers are. just wear what you like and act you.

public school does suck, but them again, its school. its gonna suck either way. and reading you additional info, why do you like private school so much? it sounds like it would suck to me. public schools, you can be more free. and there’s a variety of people. and don’t make fun of people just because some other kids are. and in public school, D’s and F’s are considered ‘stupid’. they don’t actually call it that but you know what i mean. i never enjoyed school and i didn’t really have any friends. my main goal was to get in and get out. and hate to break it to ya, but some kids have that problem. good luck and don’t worry, its not as bad as you’re making it out to be i promise. and i hope you realize that i just spent about half an hour typing this up so you better read it! just saying.
