If you want quilted totes, they sell fabric already quilted in Jo Anns. Yes, its fairly simple. Just get a good pattern. There are many patterns online, just read through them all and find the best one that looks simple. If you don’t want quilted, them just get regular cotton, but make sure you make a lining to go along with it. The pattern will show you how.

I would start with the size: how big do you want it to be? Should it be double layered on the bottom, or maybe an expanding string bag like those used in Europe for shopping [I've seen them in some old movies.] Should the straps just be attached near the top or maybe go all the way under it for more strength; should they be hand-carrying length or shoulder carrying length?

I think the easiest way would be to cut out the bottom piece, make a tube to fit around it, then sew the bottom on. Canvas is very strong, but hard to sew on a regular machine. I’ve seen some bags made out of quilted materials, denim, canvas, and almost everything in between. Almost any medium to heavy weight material would work, depending on use.

Try doing an image search on whatever purpose you want your bag to do: crafting bag, grocery bag, tote bag, etc. Compare sizes, materials, strap lengths, pockets, zippers and other closings, accessories, etc. Then look for a pattern for the one[s] you like best, modify an available one, or design your own.

Start with a simple one and add more as you get better at it. I have even seen 1 grocery bag that carried several others just like in loops inside so they would all be together when you went grocery shopping.

    Hope this has helped.
