I recently started taking the bus to work (due to gas prices!). My normal tote bags hurt my back from carrying them during my walks to and from the bus stop. However, they fit nicely on my lap during the ride. I work in a professional office, so it needs to look somewhat professional. Any suggestions for a bag that (a) will not hurt my back; (b) is easily carried when necessary; (c) will fit on my lap during a bus ride; and (d) will look nice?

I’ve commuted by bus for years now and I’ve found that a backpack is the best. You might also try a diaper bag since they’re designed for comfort and heavy use. My office is near several courthouses, so there are lots of lawyers running around, many of whom wear backpacks.
There are really nice gray and black ones, some have wheels and retractable handles like luggage. The ones for laptops tend to be more dressy, so look at office supply stores like Office Depot or OfficeMax.
Good for you taking the bus! I can definately understand why! Instead of a tote bag, have you considered carrying a messenger style bag (the bags you carry cross body). That will help ease the stress on your back and also make you “hands-free” (which is a blessing since you will be in and out of a bus and walking to your office). Here are some bags that are office appropriate and will fit a lap top (if you need) and also your other essentials (wallet, cell, etc):
