I just turned 17 yesterday and i am going to college, I need to know some tips on how to dress and what it’s appropiate and all the kind of stuff you think i should have. Add accesories and of course totes for books and nothing too expensive, no more than $100 per item unless it’s juicy couture of course. Thank you.
i went to school in Mexico and i had to use a uniform but we dress the same as americans, we always buy at AE, hollister… (i’m an american) and i always had to go to school at 8 a.m.
and i don’t like anything with the college name
my major it’s going to be graphic design and i don’t like to be in sweats i use them to sleep, no one should be going out to the street in sweats
I HAD TO USE A UNIFORM IN HIGH SHOOL

It really doesn’t matter… Just keep on dressing the same way you do, and use the same items you use. What you have has nothing to do with what the college experience will be.
i wore skinny jeans silver flat shoes a white top and then a silver bag looked nice nothing to dressy though
You have to think of the weather where you’ll be. Most of the time it’s college T’s, sweat shirts, jeans, cute sweats, etc. It’s not so much for the clothes you’ll wear to class (because trust me, after 4 hours of sleep and going to an 8 a.m. class, you don’t care if you’re in basketball shorts and a sweat shirt) it’s more for what you’ll be doing on the nights and weekends. Just stick to what you like. In the winter you’ll want some kind of cute boot though.
truthfully, that is the best thing about college… you will be going to class in sweats and t-shirts for a good portion of it. However, everybody is different, that is another great thing about college. It is much different from highschool. People don’t worry too much about “she wore that yesterday!” Everyone is either too hungover to care, or they are wearing the same thing they wore yesterday too.
What is your major…that depends a lot too.
Yeah, it really doesn’t matter how you dress. At the private university that I attend, there are lots of Barbie-doll girls that wear heels and skirts to class everyday and to be quite honest, they look silly. Then there are the others that wear flips flops, gym shorts, and a rush T-shirt. You can wear what you feel most comfortable in. Just keep this in mind: you will attract a certain type of person depending on how you dress. I.e. if you dress like a ho, slutty and STD infected guys will probably be knocking on your door. No offense and I hope that doesn’t scare you.
Wear what you normally would wear to high school. All freshman do, it’s natural.
When I was in my 1st year of college, it use to take me an hour to get dressed, put on my makeup and fix my hair. I was always dressed in style and had a matching bag.
Then second semester Freshman year roled around. Everyone in my freshman dorm started wearing jean and sweatshirts. The girls fixed their hair and makeup, but in a more simple fashion.
I just finished college. I joked w/ my friend that I needed to buy new clothes. I have spent the last 4 years wearing sweats.
The only time I got dressed up was for family events and for going out to clubs and bars.
The rest of the time I wore jeans, nice (but casual, abercrombie type) tee-shirts, hoodies w/ matching track pants. In the summer, I wore jeans and simple tanks tops.
But, mostly when I went to class I wore jeans w/ a sweatshirt or hoodie.
Haha….i use to be like you. NO SWEATS IN PUBLIC.
Then I went to college, you’ll get over trying to dress like you’re walking down a catwalk when you get to school.
No one cares what you wear. This is why 1) you are one student in a class of anywhere between 50-300. I remember looking around half way through the semester and being like, “that kids from my dorm is in this class”
2) Everyone is hungover, was up too late, studying to 4 am, got kicked out of the room by their roommate.
3) Laundry is expensive. So expensive, by the end of the week you’ll wear whatever is clean, regardless of what it looks like.
You should try layered looks and mixing colors. You should also try out different looks and hairstyles. THis is a new chapter of your life so try new things. Almost all things are appropriate just nothing to revealing or too short you want to be chic sexy not slutty sexy…okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
also the skirt and leggings look is always perfect. also try nice beads to bring out the colors in your outfit
ppl dont care how u dress in college..cuz its really expensive..so no one is trying to impress anyone with there clothes…
comfort is key. college classes can be up to three hours at a crack, so your going to want something you can spend a lot of time sitting in, so uber tight jeans arent really that practical. im sure what you have already as far as the ambercrombie and juicy stuff is just fine, but remember, you are going to be spending a lot of time sitting and studying, so make sure your stylish AND comfy
i always liked to wake up a little earlier so i could pick out my outfits. i hated the idea of going to class in sweats and an old sweatshirt. go with comfy jeans and cute kicks like classic Adidas(good if you are gonna walk a lot). id go with layers..some classes are freezing and others can be hot.
Hahaha, you’ll be suprised that in college, when you go to class, most of the people will still be in their pj’s. So invest in cute pj’s definately…
Also, get yourself a couple of pairs of really good jeans. Jeans that you can wear with anything. I’m not talking about the shredded up, bleached, “worn” jeans. Get Jeans that will take you from the classroom to a night out with your friends.
Depending on where you are going, you may need to get a really good winter coat/jacket. Since you will be walking across campus, if you are going to be anywhere that has a definate winter, then you will need a good coat. Get one that has an inner fleece jacket. That way, If you get too warm, you can just leave the fleece part on, and take the outer shell off. (Northface has these types of coats. They are expensive but worth it if you have to walk outside in the winter)
Get a cute pair of shoes that you can wear with anything and will be comfortable when you are going from class to class. A lot of people in college, including myself, wear sperry’s because they are cute, flat, and go well with just about everything. Also get a good pair of tennis shoes and cute flats. It’s hard to walk around campus in heels, though, I have seen it done before.
As far as top/shirts go, get things that you can mix and match. In dorm rooms and apartments you don’t have a whole lot of closet space so you won’t be able to fit a whole lot in them. If you get tops that you can mix and match and layer then you can stretch your wardrobe that much more. Also, Get things that are easy to care for too. (you won’t have much time to go to the dry cleaners)
Mostly people are going to wear what they are most comfortable in whether its a button up shirt, a t-shirt, a polo shirt, or a cute tank top. Generally there is no restriction to what you can wear. So get what you feel most comfortable in. If you are comfortable, then you are confident and not worrying about what you look like!
Also, I would invest in a good backpack, just because college books are big and heavy and generally you have a long walk between classes. I have been using my northface backpack for six years, from high school to college and it’s still in good shape. Most of the people on my campus carry northface backpacks as well.
Congrats on starting college!
I’m a college sophmore. I, like you, don’t really like the sweatpants look…I mean, teachers dress nicely for class, so shouldn’t we show the same respect? However, the fact that you don’t want to wear sweats doesn’t mean you have to be tooo dressed up. I’d suggest comfortable jeans or khaki pants. In the winter, sweaters or sweatshirts are comfortable. I don’t know how large your campus is, but I preferred wearing a sweatshirt to wearing a thick coat and having to carry it around with me if I got too hot walking.
As for summer, I feel perfectly fine wearing tank tops to class, but I never want to look too revealing. Some girls wore miniskirts, stilletos, and tanks, but I felt that was inappropriate and uncomfortable for class. I usually wore bermuda shorts/capris or jeans along with a t-shirt or tank. Again, remember, you’ll probably be outside walking a lot!
As for a bookbag, you’ll probably only be carrying one or two books at a time unless you choose to take all your classes right in a row. So you don’t need something very big, which is probably what your high school bookbag was.
