   Yes, canvas is a strong material.
   Paint won’t go through it.
   I’m not 100% sure if it will stay when/ if you wash it.
   But it won’t do anything bad to your bag.

   Use fabric paint (you can buy this at Walmart, Michaels, Joann Fabrics). Don’t use ordinary paints or even hobby shop paints that you find at the paint shop. It won’t work.
