I usually switch off and use a backpack if I have too many books or work. Totes are easier to get things out of though and can double up as a purse. If you have a ton of stuff to carry, a backpack is best. There is nothing wrong with using a backpack if you need to. But totes are cuter and more stylish. If you don't have a heavy amount of things to carry, go with a tote bag. Or whatever is comfiest :) Also, try Pac Sun for really cute backpacks/tote bags. Well, that really depends.

Although if you have lockers i would get a tote..
