I’m flying from O’Hare on United Airlines and going to Atlanta and switching planes to go to Savannah on Delta. Since I am switching carriers do I need to claim my bags and re-check them in? This is my first time flying by myself also so if there is any advice that would be great too!

depends. they will usualy let you know if you need to, however it never hurts to ask. sometimes they will do it for you. sometimes they won’t. i would assume that you do, that way you are prepared for it. don’t pack too much. make sure that what you bring you, you can handle on your own. that way you won’t be panicked.

    have fun traveling!

When you check in at O’Hare, ask at the counter when you get your boarding pass. Almost every airline will give you the option of sending your bags clear through, so the baggage crew switches them from plane to plane.

I’ve flown alone many times — it’s intimdating the first time, but it’s really not complicated. Just be sure to keep an eye on your departure times and what terminal you’re going to, and don’t be shy about asking airport workers for help. If you’re polite and appreciative, they’ll go out of their way for you.

No, you don’t. Most likely your bags will not be on the same plane as you. I went from Lubbock to SLC last July and my bags were a little late getting to me in SLC (only about 15 minutes). They took the scenic route via St. Louis and/or Memphis, TN.
Hopefully your flights aren’t too close together. I was supposed to have a 45 min lay over … somewhere, I think Vegas but because the plane was delayed before it ever reached me in Lubbock, I was 20 minutes late making my connection. Thank goodness they held the flight, otherwise I’d have been stuck in Vegas overnight. Although the other passengers weren’t all that thrilled.
I’m sure everything will be fine. Atlanta is a MAJOR hub, so things will probably stack up quickly. Just pray for good weather from all around the country that day.

I have never changed carriers so that is a great question. When you have a layover and stay with the same carrier, they take care of your baggage for you. I don’t know about two different Arilines though.

Just to be safe pack a change of clothes and the essentials (extra contacts, glasses, prescriptions) in your carry on. That way when you get where you are going if you luggage got lost, you will have something to wear for a day or two. I always do that just to be safe. I have known people who have had their luggage delayed – so it keeps you safe that way.

Call the Airlines and ask them how it will work.

Hi. This is a very good question. Most airlines have agreements to be able to check bags on each other. When you get to the ticket counter to check in just show the print out that you get on line to the ticket agent and mention that you are switching to delta in Atlanta. They will check your bags all the way through to Savannah. Just look at the baggage claim tickets that they give you after they check your bags.(you will find them in the ticket folder with your boarding passes.)

A word of advise to you: Just keep in mind that you are switching airlines in a very large airport, and the two airlines may not be in the same terminal. These factors lessen the chances of your bags not getting on your flight from Atlanta to Savannah.

Remember that you are allowed one personal item such as your purse, and one carry on item such as a backpack, a 22 inch rolling bag, or a small duffel bag. I would recommend that you pack all items that you will need for 24 hours after you arrive into Savannah. Pack an extra set of clothes tooth bush, etc that you may need just in case your bag is delayed in arriving.

Remember this is all just to be on the safe side, I don’t want you to worry!

Have fun in Savannah it’s a beautiful city! Try to get out to Tybee Island if you get the chance.

    Happy travels!

If you ticket is from Chicago to Savannah, you do not need to recheck you luggages.

If you have one ticket is from Chicago to Atlanta and another one from Atlanta to Savannah…YES, you do need to retrieve your luggages and re-check them again.
