In a few countries you have to pay at a grocery store to use a paper or plastic bag.
I think we need that in the US, just having reusable bags available isn’t enough encouragement for people who don’t care about the environment or don’t know about the repercussions.
Should we have to pay to use paper/plastic bags, & if so, how much per bag?

People do pay for the bags, by buying the products that the store is selling.

Some stores already charge. I think its 5 cents for paper and 10 for plastic. They should have big promotions giving away reusable bags instead of charging for them. In the stores that I have been to that charge for their bags people tend to go ahead and use what the store already has available more often than buying the bags which is boxes, which hey why not at least there already reusing something instead of using something else. I say charge for all bags and increase the price to a 25 cents and 50 cents

Aldi’s already does it and look at how much they can pay their employees! Not only is it a good way to discourage the use of disposable bags but they’re also paying their employees more and this stimulates our economy more! Excellent idea! I also like they have locking carts to prevent theft, therefore saving us money on groceries!

People should pay more for the bags because it will make them more aware of what they are doing with them.

If stores didn’t charge $5+ a bag for the reusable ones, I might be more inclined to use them. As it it, I regularly have 6 to 8 bags of groceries. That’s $30-$40 for reusable bags to put them in (and I can’t use the reusable bags as trash can liners). Even if the store charged as much as 10 cents per bag (which is significantly more than they pay for them, so they’d actually prefer people use the plastic bags in that case), I’d never be able to spend even close to $40 a year on plastic bags, so they’d still be a better deal than buying the reusable ones, which do, eventually wear out and need replacing after about a year and a half.

Yes they should pay for plastic/paper bags….It will force people to use reusable bags instead or at least limit the amount of plastic bags they use…..personally I would not ming paying a few cents for a plastic bag if it helped lower prices somewhere else or the money went to some enviromental fund or something…

I would say 10 cents per bag is a fair price….

In CA we are trying to get a law passed that will tax plastic grocery bags. I think it will be 25 cents. This has been very successful in other countries. I was living in Italy when plastic bags first became popular and the stores charged for each bag you used.
