Is there a recycling difference between thicker retail shopping bags and thinner Walmart/publix bags?4 replies

I want to recycle my retail bags like from wetseal, charlotte rousse, pacsun, etc. I can’t find what # plastic it is on the bag but it definitely feels thicker than regular grocery bags. Is there a difference, or can I just put it in the same recycling bin as regular grocery bags?

    It depends!

Do you have curbside recycling? If so, you need to contact the company that picks up or processes the recycling with this question.

Are you taking the bags to a Recycling Center? The employees at the Recycling Center should be able to answer this.

Or are you putting the bags in the bins that some Wal-Marts have at their entryways? Wal-Mart will accept almost every type of plastic bag except food-type bags (bags that held cheese, hot dogs, bread, etc.).

My husband and I run our city’s Recycling Center (we’re volunteers), and many people simply assume you can recycle things like styrofoam, bubble wrap, and food wrappers, so they’re constantly just chucking things into bins without asking. Or they’ll ask us and we’ll tell them no, and they’ll stuff it in a bin when our backs are turned. We spend a lot of time taking non-recyclables out of bins and throwing them away.

You can certainly put other types of plastic bags in with your Wal-Mart type bags, but unless you contact the appropriate person to ask about this, your other bags may be getting thrown away by whoever sorts the bags. This does not bother some people, but to us it’s important that the recycler know his/her things are being tossed and not recycled.

    Thank you for recycling!
