Typically, a batch of concrete can be made by using 1 part portland cement, 2 parts dry sand, 3 parts dry stone, 1/2 part water. The parts are in terms of weight – not volume. For example, 1 cubic foot of concrete would be made using 22 lbs cement, 10 lbs water, 41 lbs dry sand, 70 lbs dry stone (1/2″ to 3/4″ stone). This would make 1 cubic foot of concrete and would weigh about 143 lbs. The sand should be mortar or brick sand (washed and filtered if possible) and the stone should be washed if possible.

A 6-1 mix would be OK,
In the UK you can buy aggregate which already has sand in so its easy 6 bags aggregate to 1 bag cement. If your aggregate is just stone chipping with no sand added then you mix 1 bag cement to 3 bags aggregate to 3 bags sand.

Simply put one part cement with 8 parts ‘all-in ballast’, bags of which are obtainable from most DIY stores. These can be measured by dry volume in a bucket – ie 1 bucket of cement to 8 buckets of ballast. Mix thoroughly without water, then add water gradually until mix holds together [as if you could make a 'sand castle' with it without it sagging very much].
