My one year old male cat has devoloped a taste for plastic bags. I have tried keeping them out of the way as much as possible but he goes to quite extraordinary lengths to get to them. I’m worried because I’ve noticed that they’re coming out in his poos, but they are going to get wrapped up in his bowels if he doesn’t stop. How can I train him not to do this? Can you train a cat?

“Can you train a cat”
You can’t. Some cats are just highly attracted to plastic. I know it can be frustrating, as I’ve had a few through the years and one that I have now adores the stuff. I don’t think anyone really knows why they like them… they just do. Some say it’s because of the petroleum products used to make them and others say that they’re attracted by the texture. At any rate, keeping them away from him is all you can really do to absoloutely assure his safety. Since he likes plastic bags, it’s a good idea to keep other plastics out of reach. Things like candy wrappers, ziploc bags and cellophane packaging can be particularly dangerous to leave laying around. I keep a childproof lock on one cabinet and store everything like that in the locked cabinet. I’m afraid that’s all you can do, as deterrants will only work as long as you’re there to catch him in the act.
For some reason, cats LOVE plastic……….and I know of NO WAY to train them to leave it alone!
This was my solution to the problem…….
My cats like to play with and eat plastic bags, too. So, I put SOME in a drawer, if I want to save them, and throw the rest into the GARBAGE CAN. It has a lid, so they can’t get into it. If you don’t leave the bags out where he can SEE them, he shouldn’t be able to get to them as easily…….
Once in awhile, I’ll take one of the longer plastic bags ( newspaper bags ), roll it up lengthwise, and tie it into a BIG KNOT. This takes up most of the bag, but they can still play with it…….just not chew / swallow it.
Also, a “toy” that my cats LOVE to play with ( toss around, bat across the floor, carry and tease each other with ) is….the “sleeve” that Ritz or saltine crackers come in. Do the same lengthwise rolling and tie this into a double knot. The waxy paper doesn’t chew easily, and it makes noise when they play with it.
Just a couple of suggestions for “alternative toys”, instead of the big, open plastic bags………PLEASE get into the HABIT of GETTING RID of the plastic bags. It sounds like you’ve been LUCKY so far, that he’s not obstructed……….
Hope you get something from this……..Good luck.
Try spraying the bags with a few shots of Bitter Apple spray. Keep the plastic bags in a place where the cat cannot get to or store them in a closed box.
I was going to suggest spraying the bags with a strong deterrent, maybe similar to the squirrel away stuff (chili based) or window cleaner, but it then occurred to me that you might not be able to reuse the bags because they would be wet unless you can find a place to let them dry out. Maybe wherever you keep the bags add a couple of moth balls? Obviously removing them from sight for starters. The chap who suggested tying some into a strong compact knot (I do this with unused bin liners) so your cat can play with the odd one has a good point, maybe with some strong string around so it won’t come apart too quickly.
Your cat is retarded.
I’m not sure you can. You really have to make sure these bags are well out of the way before he eats one and it causes a blockage. Apart from the fact that he could die – its going to be very expensive when he needs surgery to remove one!
Who buys plastic bags these days anyway?? Get a bag for life and get rid of the plastic bags. There is your answer!
I don’t know what to suggest. Suffice it to say, you can not train a cat, your cat will train you.
