Can my car be fixed after the air bags deployed?10 replies

I was in a car wreck today, I have a Merc.C230. Only the side air bags came out on the side that I was hit on. My back door is badly damaged but other than that the car started and seems fine. But I keep hearing that a car will be totaled once air bags deploy. Got any encouraging news on this?

The car can be repaired but the cost has to be factored in. My son handles this type of repair every day at his shop.

A car is totaled if the cost to repair it is more than the value of the car. Airbags are replaced daily – body shops just put in a new airbag, a new sensor, and a new module.

the car will only be totaled if the damage is more than the car is worth, sounds to me that they will fix it for you.

Generally it can be repaired, but it will be VERY expensive. When someone (especially insurance agent) talks about a car being totaled, all that means is that the cost to repair the car completely is greater than the book value of the car. In which case, the insurance company will only pay out the value of the car, not what it would take to repair it.
If it’s a newer car, than this might not be the case, but just the bags themselves will cost several thousand $$ to replace, before you even get to the actual damage caused by the accident itself.

That’s not true. You can get new airbags. But they say when the bags go its totaled .there just saying most of the time when the go its a bad reck. Some one will look at it to tell you if its totaled. Most of time you want it to be because after that the car starts to have all kinds of problems.Good luck

I’m never heard that. I don’t see why the car couldn’t be repaired including the deployed air bags and any associated parts that might be required along with the air bags such as crash sensors and such. I’m not a Mercedes mechanic but I find it hard to believe that a car is totaled after air bag deployment.

most cars are totalled after the airbags are deployed primarily because most cars on the road are not worth much more than the cost of a couple airbags, it sounds like your car is a high value vehicle so replacing the airbags becomes much more economically feasible, just make sure you get it done by a trustworthy body shop
