We’re not talking shops here or wisecrack answers, what people, what gender and what country influences fashion the most, not just today but through the ages?
Seems most of you cannot get away from today’s modern world and celebs, what about the past? Who created fashion in the 1700′s?

I think celebrities all over influence fashion…if you see something on a celebrity most people are much more likely to buy it. And the trends go from coast to coast in my opinion…

Celebrities influence fashion a whole lot. Lets see how many people are seen now with “The Katie” Katie Holmes/Cruise’s new bob. Its what we watch on TV and what we think looks good on them-we try to emulate them.

Fashion changes because of our innate desire to be attractive to potential mates, and these days mostly because many many companies make alot of money from changing fashion.

it is in all legitimacy a conspiracy. My mother works in reatil, and has worked her entire life in Retail, and they have seminars specifically explaining this —- Fashion changes, purposely, to ensure job security and profits. They pruposely change to complete opposites so that designers and fashionistas will continue to spend money to keep up with fashions. IE — if flat shoes are in this season, they will pruposely designate the extreme opposite — like 6″ stilleto heels to be in style the following season to continuously reassure more shoppers, more buyers, more money, more profits.

Fashion merchandisers and buyers set the “decisions” for whats in style. Designers typically follow what has been predetermined at fashion seminars (hosted by merchandisers and buyers) to be “in” the next season — though a lot of designers follow their own drummer, things like high-fashion and coteure(no clue how to spell that, sorry) dont follow the typical fashion rules as everyday wear, so they dont count.

Designers dictate fashion. With their creative imaginations and couture designs. Which then filters down to the high street. I think its mainly homosexual men in fashion, using their famine side to be very creative…. and flamboyant. The main fashion shows are Milan, Paris, New York and London.

I would definitely not say celebrities.

I get really annoyed when I take a flick through my friends magazines and see people advertising ‘the next big thing to be seen in’ and people have already been wearing them for ages. Take converse for example, the magazines went crazy about how they had made a come back like last year..they had made a come back many years before that.

I think it’s normal people that set the trends, I get influenced by people I see walking down the street.

I hate the clothing in the shops right now, it’s awful!

Cynical old me believes that in modern time fashion is exploitation and very largely manufactured by the fashion industry, but its mostly harmless and there are worse industries.

Fashion didn’t change as much as it does today. People wore long, baggy skirts for ages. Most likely the aristocracy/royalty of this country influenced change. They in turn would have been influenced by their travels and what they saw abroad. until the 19th century, Britain didn’t follow fashion. The advent of department stores changed a lot. e.g. they had windows – unbelievable but shops didn’t have window displays before this.
