I’ve always wondered why fashion designers seem to look to the past for inspiration and not come up with something totally unique? Right now all the fashion seems to be going 80s/early 90s now and they sell the same stuff you’d see at the thrift store but for $200 bucks more. Why do designers always look to the past?

They look to the past, but they also put a new spin on it.
What’s going on in fashion now isn’t a complete carbon copy of 1988, but rather styles taken from that era with a modern twist.
The new “underground” look right now has been coined New Rave (a pun on a mix of New Wave, Rave, and Cyber-Punk looks) So it can also be a mixture of old styles mixed together to create a new one.
I think because its the period of time when they grew up so they like making clothes they used to wear as a teen and making it their own and more unique .
because fashion goes in a cycle. it’s not like they’re gonna come up with “new” articles of clothes.. the ideas have to come from somewhere. there actually are many unique things if you look at runway fashion, but in the real world clothes/fashion have to be practical, and all of that has already been “invented”, you could say.
You can only change things so many times until u start over again..
new fashions come out..
but don’t sell,, or cost too much.. so they stay with what they no will sale.. and make them money..
It is all about the $$$$$$$ money… !
cuz they cant think of anything them slefs
