I’d like to incorporate the fashion I see on the streets in my city for a marketing project, but I’m now sure how I can snap pics without looking like sleazy? My first choice is to walk up to the women and ask to take a picture of them, but that’s not always practical. Sometimes people will be across a street and too far to catch up with.

Be careful about taking people’s photos without their permission. If you publish pictures where a person is recognizable, especially if their face is visible, they can sue you if you do not have a release.
You can’t If you see something that appeals to you, ask if you can take a photograph. Never photograph something or someone without permission. If they are across the street – you’ll find another subject. If you photograph someone and it appears in a publication, marketing project, etc. you may be sued for not getting permsision.
where a nice suit (or some nice clothes) with an ID card on your clothes with your picture on it and carry around a clipboard with some paper on it…. if you look professional you wont look sleazy… but I think you should ask permission before just taking a picture of someone and using it for your marketing project!
Get a digital camera with decent zoom, preferably a camcorder/still camera all in one and/or one that can pull stills from video. Then start shooting. Snap buildings, people, dogs, and more. When people ask, say you’re trying to get pictures of the city and the fashion choices of the people in it. But lots of people won’t stop to ask if you’re snapping away or filming like crazy because they won’t want to disturb you. As long as you don’t focus too much on scantily clad women or children, you’ll probably have no problems. Try to ask those you can to pause or stand still and remember that all those extra shots of buildings and even animals could come in handy as part of this project or even for a future one. Good luck!
Ask – most people will volunteer freely for pictures, but remember to make it quick, and be nice if they refuse. If pictures will be posted on the internet, let them know in advance.
If they are too far away, then perhaps it doesn’t matter.
This, of course, assumes that you a documenting fashion, and not being a pervert. If you get busted, and your pictures don’t tell the “marketing project” story, you could be in for trouble. If a regular person (not police), catches you, be honest.
