How do I become a famous fashion designer?7 replies

Basically I want to design clothes for women and men. But I don’t know how. I drew some stuff but they don’t look that good to me. I can draw. I spend most of my time doing that. Should I draw models and put clothes on them? Or just draw the clothes. I want to have fashion shows and hire top models to walk the runway in my clothes. So please answer my question because your opinion really counts!

Thanks Alot,
Ahkeem

    I don’t know a lot about this stuff but I do know that you have to draw the models and then draw the clothes on them.

    You should go to a design school like FIDM or Parsons, then when you get your degree get an internship with a top company or designer and take it from there!

    that’s my dream!
    I’m pretty good at drawing… it would help if you drew models then out the clothes!
    Just keep practicing, don’t lose your dream! =)

    1st don’t take tention…….
    then think of the one thing {it can be ur inspiration- a person or a part of nature}
    then draw whatever 1st hits ur mind
    I am sure it will look special
    {whether it is just the clothes or models wearing it}

    Fashion designing is a pretty independent job. Personally, I thin you don’t really need to have contact with any other fashion designers in order to land in the right place-it’s a battlefield out there!

    I think finding your own style and individuality is most important. All fashion designers are completely different and followed their likes and dislikes, however awful or beautiful people think their designs are. There are no two fashion designers that are the same, there’s just no point for it. The fashion industry craves for never seen designs all the time. So don’t worry if you think your creativity and effort only makes your ideas seem strange and ugly. Believe or not, there are people out there who have been waiting for such designs all their lives.

    Also choosing the right location is extremely important. Milan, Barcelona, Rio, Paris, New York are full of inspiration and different cultures which give you ideas as to what to create.

    It would be better if you can scan some of those designs and put it in the question. The first thing you should know is if the public would want to buy what can bring to the fashion industry.

    I’m an aspiring fashion designer too!

    If your having trouble designing I recommend you go to your news-agency and purchase Vogue! I’m an avid Vogue reader and I highly recommend it to you. It displays all the works of the top designers, up and coming designers as well as articles which will give you more a feel for the fashion industry.

    I’m only 14 so I plan to go to design school after leaving school, i recommend you find a local college or course you can follow on fashion design as it will explain all the business side of things such as copyright and manufacturing etc.

    When drawing clothes it doesn’t overly matter how you draw it however I would recommend you draw it on a model as the model wears the clothes-the clothes dont wear the model.

    This may also help you when designing your first collection:

    Go out there and source some inspiration eg. maybe a piece of artwork which you could use the colors to offset the palette and the proportions and shape to influence the silhouette. 99% of designer collection often do source inspiration as it often creates a good runway show and makes the clothes more credible.

    I also recommend you watch ‘Project Runway’ it follows a series of aspiring designers who recieve design challenges which they have to fulfill. It is my absoloute most favourite show.

    Also get to learn how to use a sewing machine as you want to have a feel as how clothes are constructed and how different seams alter the silhoutte.

    Here are a couple of links you might want to take a look at:

    Hope this helps :)

    And in a few years time I’ll see you on the runway ;)
